Chapter Ten

Solomon was awakened in the middle of the night by soft mewling sounds. He decided to camp out on the floor at the foot of Tabitha’s bed. He didn’t know why, he just felt the need to do so.

He bolted upright, chest bare, hair tossed, wearing only a pair of pajama bottoms. He gazed up at the bed and noticed Tabitha tossing, turning, and making little sounds. She was undoubtedly dreaming and it was not a pretty one. Upon closer inspection, Solomon realized she wasn’t having a nightmare, but more like talking in her sleep.

Crawling into bed with her, Solomon pulled her within the confines of his arms. He rested his chin against the top of her head, and her arms instantly wrapped around his bare chest as she snuggled closer to him.

“Umm,” she murmured.

“Rest, Little Sparrow,” he whispered.

“You keep calling me that,” she mumbled.

“That’s because you’re my Little Sparrow, get used to my calling you that.”

“Okay. What time is it?”

“A little after midnight. You’ve only been asleep for a couple of hours.”

“You’re staying in bed with me, right?”

“Of course. Sleep,” he whispered, kissing the top of her head.

“Has she taken the bait?” The man asked in a well-spoken voice.

“I’m not sure. According to my sources, she’s with a tall guy wearing a ponytail, who appears to be either Native American or Hispanic.”

“Do we know his identity?” he questioned.

“Not yet.”

“We need to get the girl,” he said nervously. “If she’s ever thoroughly questioned by an adequate therapist, she can ruin us all.”

“I doubt it. She’s all messed up in the head. It will take a miracle to get any sense out of her, and then who’ll believe a psycho who tried to off her stepbrother? And what all? She hasn’t the faintest idea of who I am.”

“True. I don’t want to take any chances with Tia. It took me years to find her, and I don’t wish to lose sight of her. I underestimated her. She took Celia from that facility right from under our noses. No more playing games; kill her. We’ll deal with the consequences as they arise. With her out of the way, we’ll spin it whereas Celia is receiving treatment in another facility, and this time she will not have a chance to get better.”

“Are you sure you want to take the chance? I mean, I don’t know what she’s doing, but I can tell you this, it’s not just modeling. She’s outwitted us for about a year now. I can’t get any information on her. It’s as if she doesn’t exist, as Tia Moore-Ellis or this Tabitha James persona that she’s taken on.”

“Find out if she’s ever entered the witness protection program. That could be a reason you haven’t been able to get anything on her yet.”

“Why would she be in the WPP?” he asked, looking at the well-groomed figure, sitting behind the antique Louis XVII desk in a massive, high-backed brown leather chair. Its occupant swung slightly from left to right and back again, all while clicking the top of a pen.
